If these recovered raw materials are used to produce new plastics, the need for energy-intensive extraction of fossil-based resources is also eliminated.<br\/>Liquefying just one metric ton of plastic waste in this way can save up to five tons of CO\u2082. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The handling of plastic waste is a global issue. Only in recent years have manufacturers begun to seriously consider what happens to their products at the end of their life cycle. Addressing this problem requires Design for Recycling (DfR) principles, along with efficient collection systems and appropriate recycling processes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carboliq process is ideally suited to handling mixed and contaminated plastic waste. It is specifically designed for processing post-consumer plastics \u2013 and gives these materials new value. However, this approach has its limitations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The quality of the resulting recyclates is often lower because the material properties change when plastics are re-melted. As a result, these recyclates are typically reused in lower-value applications. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additives and legacy components remain in the material, making it unsuitable for reuse in applications where material purity is essential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health concerns are increasingly relevant, as some substances in recyclates are considered potentially harmful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For these reasons, mechanically recycled plastics are usually limited to lower-grade applications. The recovered input materials can be used to produce high-quality, virgin-grade plastics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-xsmall\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-medium\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Unlike mechanical recycling, where material aging and mixing can degrade quality, chemical recycling preserves\u2014or even enhances\u2014the original value of the material. <br\/>This is especially important for contact-sensitive applications such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, which are subject to strict regulations. The savings result from avoiding the thermal recycling of plastic waste and substituting fossil-based naphtha with the conversion product (CLR) produced.
